Sidoarjo, a regency located in East Java, often goes unnoticed by tourists. Known as the Delta City due to being flanked by two large rivers, Kali Mas and Kali Porong, Sidoarjo holds a million amazing and hidden natural charms and panoramas that are still unknown to many.

Although not as popular as other tourist destinations like Semarang or Jogja, Sidoarjo offers a wide array of tourist spots that are equally satisfying. From cultural and historic sites to Instagrammable photo spots, and even beautiful islands and beaches, you can find it all here.

Access to Sidoarjo is incredibly convenient. Visitors only need a few minutes drive from Juanda International Airport and the bus terminal. For transportation within the regency, visitors can choose between online taxis or traditional taxis readily available in the airport and terminal areas.

A Glimpse into Sidoarjo's History

Since 1851, Sidoarjo was known as Sidokare. It was one of Surabaya's areas and was led by a regent named R. NG. Djoyohardjo. In 1859, Sidokare separated from Surabaya and became its own regency. A couple of months later, Sidokare changed its name to Sidoarjo, as we know it today.

Sidoarjo's Culinary Delights and Traditional Crafts

Sidoarjo is renowned for its sea products like milkfish, prawn, crab, and cockle mussel. It's no surprise that many local cuisines are made with fish and seafood as the main ingredients. Some dishes you must try include:

  • Smoked Milkfish (Bandeng Asap): A delicious dish that can be found on Mojopahit Street, Sidoarjo.
  • Presto Milkfish (Bandeng Presto): Milkfish cooked until its bones are soft.
  • Milkfish Otak-Otak: A flavorful dish made from finely ground milkfish meat.
  • Lontong Kupang: A unique dish consisting of rice cakes (lontong) and small clams (kupang) drenched in a savory black sauce.
  • Fermented Prawn Paste (Petis Udang): A flavorful paste with a strong prawn taste.
  • Prawn Crackers (Kerupuk Udang) and Mussel Crackers (Kerupuk Kupang): Crispy snacks perfect for souvenirs.

Beyond its culinary offerings, Sidoarjo is also known as a center for batik painting. Several villages such as Jetis, Sekardangan, and Kenongo produce captivating batik patterns and motifs. Tourists can easily purchase high-quality batik cloth, sold both retail and wholesale, making it an ideal souvenir to take home.

So, if you're looking for a unique travel destination with rich culinary traditions and cultural heritage, Sidoarjo is definitely a place worth visiting.
