Duren Sari, Trenggalek: From Giant Durian Forest to World-Class Tourism Village
TRENGGALEK – Duren Sari Tourism Village in Sawahan, Trenggalek Regency, East Java, has transformed from being known as a local "durian paradise" into a world-class tourism destination. With multiple national awards and recognition, this village stands as a shining example of successful community-based tourism development.
A Giant Durian Forest with International Certification
The village's main attraction is the International Durio Forestry (IDF), a 650-hectare durian forest officially recognized by the Ministry of Agriculture in 2016. Thousands of century-old durian trees, some believed to date back to the colonial era, thrive in this area.
During harvest season, visitors can experience a unique adventure: exploring the forest, witnessing the harvest firsthand, and tasting freshly fallen durians. The wide variety of local durians, each with its own distinct flavor, makes Duren Sari an unparalleled destination for durian lovers.
Blending Nature, Education, and Culture
Beyond durians, Duren Sari offers a rich mix of experiences. The local Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) has developed various attractions, including traditional batik-making workshops, folk games such as egrang (bamboo stilts), and performances of classical karawitan music. For those seeking adrenaline, river tubing on the village's clear rivers is a favorite choice.
Visitors can also stay overnight in village-run homestays, providing a chance to experience the daily life of locals while enjoying traditional dishes such as tiwul jambul and a wide range of durian-based delicacies.
Rooted in the Spirit of Community
Duren Sari's journey to success began in 2015 when residents formed Pokdarwis to address environmental and economic challenges. Through collective effort, they cleaned rivers, rehabilitated forests, and designed attractive tourism packages.
"We wanted to show that village potential can be explored and developed together. Tourism here is not only about durians, but also about preserving nature and local wisdom," said a representative of Pokdarwis.
Thanks to this dedication, Duren Sari now welcomes thousands of tourists each year and has become one of East Java's flagship destinations. Its inspiring story proves that with community spirit, innovation, and perseverance, local potential can be elevated to the global stage.
